I'm now 24! This year I decided to go all out with the unicorns. When I turned 15, my birthday was unicorn themed, so I thought why not again? It's totally acceptable to be 24 and still adore (and wear!) unicorns. I like everything unicorn anyways, because most of the time it's pastel, sparkly, and girly... which are the things I adore! To match my unicorn theme, I made an outfit to match.
Outfit Details:
Top & Skirt: Ruffle Blouse Tutorial, Tulle Circle Skirt Tutorial
Unicorn headband: Envy Fine Clothing
Shoes: Charlotte Russe
I had tons of fun with this photoshoot. While prepping for it, I might've looked a little ridiculous hauling around so much unicorn themed items. Especially the huge unicorn pinata I got. It's literally half my size, haha! Originally I had gotten a mini one for my birthday, but I was browsing the flea market one day and the huge unicorn caught my eye. I just had to get it. :)
The Patterns:
I will be uploading sewing tutorials on how I made my outfit, after the birthday craziness has gone by. For now, I'll let you know which patterns I used. :)
As a starting point for this blouse, I used the top of the Sweetheart Dress pattern from Patterns for Pirates, but you could use any blouse pattern you have available. With a few adjustments, you'll have a cute ruffle blouse.
(P.S. Random fun fact: This cute little unicorn charm is almost 10 years old! My parents gave it to me, with matching earrings, when I turned 15)
For the skirt, I cut out 5 layers of tulle circle skirts to make it poofy and twirly. I also added a matching lining layer. I opted for an elastic waistband because I like comfort, and I found this glitter elastic on Etsy that I loved. Every time that I've sewed on an elastic waistband, I've had to hide the elastic since it was usually just plain black or white. But this time, I loved showing off the pink sparkle.
The Fabric:
This unicorn print fabric from So Sew English Fabrics was my inspiration for this outfit. I chose the french terry, but this print also comes in double brushed poly. I absolutely adore this whimsical unicorn print.
While I usually go for pink, I decided to make my tulle skirt a pastel lavender, to match the unicorn print on the ruffle top. I used shiny nylon tulle from my local Joann store. I can't remember the exact name of the color though. (I was too excited to sew my skirt!)
For the lining, I used a lavender liverpool with a slight shimmer, also from my local Joann store. My husband actually picked it out while I was running up and down the fabric aisles looking for the perfect lining to match my tulle. He literally pointed at the fabric bolt saying, "What about this one?" Really, sometimes husbands really know what they're doing at fabric stores, haha!
Well, there goes another year and another birthday outfit! I'm especially excited about this one, because I sewed it all up myself. :)
Here's to a magical TWENTY FOUR! :D
