"Sink your roots in him and build on him. Be strengthened by the faith that you were taught, and overflow with thanksgiving."
- COLOSSIANS 2:7
This verse tells us four things we must do as Christians, and they can easily be applied to our everyday life.
1. "Sink your roots in him"
We are told to sink our roots in Jesus. From the very first moment we come to Jesus, we should hold on tightly and plant our roots in Him so that we may grow as we are meant to be. We should be like the seeds that were planted on the good ground and produced grain. (Matthew 13: 8) As a Christian, ask yourself: "Am I truly rooted in Jesus?" If you produce grain, you are truly planted on the good ground. To produce grain means to produce results for God's kingdom. Inviting people to church, evangelizing, growing your ministry, etc are all ways of producing results.
2. "Build on him"
If we build on the rock that is Jesus Christ, the bible calls us "wise." If our foundation is Jesus Christ, we can overcome anything that comes our way. (Matthew 7:24-25) Ask yourself: "When life around me crumbles down, am I thrown down and defeated, or do I stand victorious in Christ?" If we are building on Christ, we are able to stand firm on the foundation. No matter what our problem is, we should stay strong, knowing that Jesus is with us. Easier said than done, I personally know. Whenever we are going through a storm in our life, we should immerse ourselves with Jesus. Reading the Bible, devotionals, praying, or my favorite: sitting outside on nice sunny day with a cold drink and listening to worship music are all ways to immerse ourselves with Jesus.
3. "Be strengthened by the faith that you were taught"
The bible tells us to be firm in faith, be courageous, and be strong. (1 Corinthians 16:13)
Our faith is a very powerful thing. Even a tiny amount, as small as a mustard seed, can move mountains. We are a strong Christian when we have faith that is unshakeable, unmovable, and without any doubts. Faith comes from hearing, so to increase our faith we can go to church, bible studies, read books, or even just chat over coffee with another believer about God.
4. "Overflow with thanksgiving."
There are many instances where the bible tells us to be thankful. We should be thankful for and in everything we do. In all circumstances we should be thankful, even the bad times. When we choose to look at the bad side, we won't find a single thing to be thankful for. But, when we look at our circumstances through the eyes of Jesus, we will begin to see we are really blessed. A very practical way to overflow with thanksgiving is to keep a gratitude journal. Not everything has to be written. Fill it with sketches and pictures of gratitude and thankfulness. Once your journal is full, it can be kept as a scrapbook and can be looked back at to be reminded of God's goodness.
